Is God Against Wealth?

Rev. Dr. D. Vijay Kumar On money and the heart 1 min read

Is God against wealth? Many believers carry quiet guilt about money, while others chase it as though it were salvation itself. Scripture takes neither path. It neither worships wealth nor condemns it outright. The question is not how much we have, but who is master of it.

The Bible is full of prosperous people whom God blessed — Abraham, Job, Solomon. Wealth itself is not sin. What Scripture warns against is the love of money, the trust in riches that pushes God from the throne of the heart. “You cannot serve both God and money,” Jesus said — not because money is evil, but because the heart cannot hold two masters.

“Wealth is a good servant but a terrible master.”

Deuteronomy reminds Israel to remember the Lord their God, “for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” The ability to earn is itself a gift. The danger comes when we forget the Giver and worship the gift.

The believer's call is stewardship: to receive wealth with gratitude, hold it with open hands, use it for the good of others, and never let it own us. Money laid at the feet of God becomes an instrument of blessing; money enthroned in the heart becomes an idol.

Rev. Dr. D. Vijay Kumar writes and teaches on faith and stewardship.
